My Horns are Showing

I found this set of bull horns mounted on some wood in the basement of my grandmother's old house and just had to fix them up. It has to be over 100+ years old, given that the house has been in my family since 1920s.

The plan:

  1. Deconstruct the entire thing: Tearing the weird, plastic fabric off, pulling out all the decorative tacks and nails

  2. Sanding the horns

  3. Polishing the horns

  4. Getting new wood and leather

  5. Attaching the horns to the wood along with the leather

  6. Assembling everything together and finishing off with decorative details

Before and after what it looked like after I took off the plastic covering that was suppose to look like leather. I can't begin to describe what it smelled like, it was so nasty. What did I find underneath it all . . . a bunch of rusty nails that made no sense in why there were so many in random spots. This deconstruction is definitely taking a lot longer than I originally thought.

I'm also finding out that the wood is useless with how many holes are in it now.

Had to take some time to goof off on this one. It was taking forever to get the millions of tiny rusted nails out of the horns and wooden back. Not to mention the sanding process on the ones I could get off. It takes time, but it is going to be so worth it when I am through with it, it's going to look so good!

Updates to come.
