Medusa's Revenge
"Tell Me, What Color Do Cowards Bleed?"
Another project done!
I’ve been super excited to show the final product of my Medusa sticker that I collaborated with my friend, for her project that’s coming up, to support those effected by rape. As soon as everything is together I will post about it again. Until then let me tell you about this sticker.
The story of Medusa was my inspiration for creating this picture. The myth of Medusa commonly goes like this: Medusa and her two sisters were some of the most beautiful women in all of Greece. Medusa herself was a follower of Athena and one day when she was going to the temple, Poseidon, God of the Sea, intercepted Medusa and raped her in the temple of Athena. Afterwards, Athena came down to Medusa and turned her into a Gorgon and able to turn men, who looked her in the eyes to stone.
It is often seen and interpreted that Athena cursed Medusa out of hatred and jealousy for disgracing her temple, but there is another way that is also talked about and that I actually prefer to look at the story. The Greek word for Medusa means “to guard, to protect” and Gorgon means “grim, fierce.” Rather than punishing Medusa, it can be interpreted that Athena was trying to protect her so she wasn’t a victim of her beauty and gifting her with an ability to protect herself -turning men to stone.
How do you often hear the myth talked about?
